In Vermont, even the pears are made of maple. The smaller of the pair was turned two on axes to add a little asymmetry. Excited to be bringing these with me to @stoweartsfestival this weekend.

A freshly turned ash hollowform and I had some fun playing with fire yesterday. Some checking along the rays as there usually is when charring this deeply, but it held together nicely. This one should look great once it is brushed/burnished and has an oil finish rubbed in. Should be done in time for @stoweartsfestival.

Work in progress - 10 hollowforms. One took a bit longer than the others. This spalted maple had such nice figure I didnt want to waste any, so all the scraps are becoming tiny little vessels.

Bridges. 17” x 15” x 3” platter. Spalted boxelder burl, aluminum, laquer. Optional stand: Ebonized walnut, boxelder.

This one was challenging - the spalting had softened the wood quite a bit, requiring sharp tools and a light touch and it was tough to keep it together on the lathe. Preserving the ‘land bridge’ was a priority and I was very pleased that it remained intact. The aluminum was bent to fit, polished, and added after for visual balance.

New product alert! Introducing the Borden candlesticks - an asymmetrical pairing of a classic midcentury form. Shown here in curly ambrosia maple 5.5” x 2” with hand-hammered copper inserts that fit a standard 7/8” taper candle.

I often know not only the species of the wood I wo

I often know not only the species of the wood I work with, but also where that specific tree grew. This piece, from another woodworker’s discard, is a complete mystery though. Spalted and the holes are insect-made. (Semi) ring porous. If you have a species guess let me know in the comments.
