Silver Maple, Fall

Silver Maple, Fall

Perspectival Forms Series. Carved vessel with textured and painted interior. Silver maple, acrylic paint. 6″ x 5″ x 5″ (Nature’s Canvas, SAQA/AAW touring exhibition)

Of the different ideas I have explored in this series – creating figures out of multiple layers of carve negative space that can only be seen from a particular viewpoint – the one that I keep coming back to is the idea of creating a negative space carved version of the source of the material for the vessel itself. In this case, from the lathe-turned silver maple vessel, I have subtracted a silver maple trunk and branches.

This piece will be part of the Nature’s Canvas exhibition (Carol Sauvion, juror) opening at the Windgate Museum of Art in Summer 2026 and traveling through 2028.
