𝘽𝙚𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙚, 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙨𝙥𝙞𝙩𝙚, 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙨. Silver Maple burl, aluminum, and food-safe resin. Botanical Tung Oil finish. 16” x 6”. $580. Because we all have our cracks and are all something of a group effort, 50% of the sale price of this piece will go to the Committee on Temporary Shelter for their work with people experiencing and at risk of homelessness.
This bowl has a story:
The wood for this bowl came from a discard pile. After coring out some smaller more pristine bowls from the center of this chunk of rare burl-figured log, a friend set this large blank aside. The bark inclusions, voids and cracks in the piece, though bound up with the swirling grain that makes the wood so interesting, required more attention than he wanted to prioritize at the time. When he generously offered it up to anyone willing to take it on, those cracks and other ‘flaws’ were precisely what drew me to it. Those that remained after re-turning the blank and giving it its final form have been highlighted with aluminum and food-safe resin, rather than concealed. We all have cracks, some deeper than others, but they are part of what make us beautiful.
Because the final form was partially constrained by the initial coring process, which was not my work, I think of this one as a bit of a group effort - a perfect candidate for a fundraiser for a worthy cause.
